10 years later, I Bought a G-shock Watch (G-SHOCK Ref. 6900-Pt80 By John Mayer)

A fun portion of my life is paying restitution to my younger self- paying for experiences I couldn’t afford back when. For instance, I have hundreds of dollars worth of Zoids model kits waiting to be opened. Which reminds me- I’ve been waiting to go Disney World for over 20 years.

Even with all my thoughtlessness, I couldn’t get myself to buy a G-shock, not least for its bulkiness and toy-like appearance. No matter how much I wanted it in college.

In the late 2000s to early 2010s, Kanye made headlines not only for music but for fashion; his accessories were groundbreaking. Shutter shades. Louis Vuitton Don. And, my favorite, G-shock.

At the time, I could not afford one. I don’t think I would have wanted it so much if my roommate didn’t have one- so close, but so far. Anyways, the G-shock trend was short-lived and soon forgotten.

Then, John Mayer released a G-shock watch last December. It is the perfect watch to reignite a 90s kid’s G-shock fervor.

The watch is limited edition with a colorway that references an 80s Casio keyboard. The bulkiness is almost desirable for the retro vibe.

A white G-shock has no practical utility. A tool watch that you have to be careful with- it’s pretty oxymoronic (but here we are).

Then again, that’s part of collecting watches.

Watches are not supposed to make sense. Buyer’s remorse is an integral part of buying a watch. Otherwise, where is the fun in buying something that you absolutely do not need?
